United States Payroll & Wage FAQ
Answers to common statutory questions regarding state income withholding, overtime limits, and final payouts.
Federal income tax withholding is calculated using the IRS percentage method from Publication 15-T. For 2026, the standard deduction is $15,000 for single filers and $30,000 for married couples filing jointly. Wages exceeding standard deductions are taxed across progressive brackets ranging from 10% to 37%.
FICA consists of two taxes: Social Security (6.2%) and Medicare (1.45%). For 2026, Social Security taxes only apply up to the statutory wage base limit of $176,100 (SSA § 230). Wages earned above $176,100 are exempt from Social Security deductions. Medicare has no wage ceiling, plus an additional 0.9% surtax on single wages over $200,000 ($250,000 married).
Under the federal FLSA, non-exempt hourly employees must receive 1.5 times their regular rate of pay for all hours worked over 40 in a single seven-day workweek. Some states offer stronger protections; for example, California also requires daily overtime for hours worked past 8 in a single day.
State income tax rates range from 0% (such as in Texas, Florida, and Nevada) to graduated progressive brackets up to 13.3% in California and 10.9% in New York. Additionally, several states mandate mandatory employee-paid disability or family leave contributions (such as California's 1.30% uncapped CASDI).
